Warranty Management

Store, organize, and access all your warranty documents in one secure location—ready when you need them most.

Why Digital Warranty Storage Matters

Picture this: Your dishwasher stops draining. You're pretty sure it's still under warranty, but where did you put that paperwork? The junk drawer? A filing cabinet? That folder somewhere on your computer?

HomeLifeSpan eliminates this frustration by:

  • Centralizing all warranties in one searchable location
  • Tracking expiration dates so you know what's covered
  • Linking warranties to appliances for instant context
  • Alerting you before warranties expire

Adding a Warranty

To add a warranty document:

  1. Go to Warranties in the sidebar
  2. Click "Add Warranty"
  3. Fill in the warranty details:

| Field | Description | |-------|-------------| | Title | A descriptive name (e.g., "Samsung Refrigerator Warranty") | | Appliance | Link to an existing appliance (optional but recommended) | | Start Date | When coverage began | | Expiration Date | When coverage ends | | Coverage Type | Manufacturer, extended, home warranty, etc. | | Document | Upload PDF or image of the warranty | | Notes | Any additional details |

  1. Click Save
Can't find the physical warranty?

Many manufacturers let you look up warranty info online using your model and serial number. You can also often find digital copies in your email from the original purchase.

Warranty Status Indicators

HomeLifeSpan shows warranty status at a glance:

| Status | Meaning | |--------|---------| | 🟢 Active | Warranty is currently valid | | 🟡 Expiring Soon | Warranty expires within 90 days | | 🔴 Expired | Warranty has ended | | ⚪ No Warranty | No warranty on file |

Linking Warranties to Appliances

For the best experience, always link warranties to their appliances:

  1. When adding a warranty, select the appliance from the dropdown
  2. Or, from an appliance's detail page, click "Add Warranty"

This creates a two-way connection:

  • From the warranty, you can jump to the appliance
  • From the appliance, you can see all linked warranties
Note

An appliance can have multiple warranties! Many people have the original manufacturer warranty plus an extended warranty or home warranty plan.

Types of Warranties to Track

Manufacturer Warranties

The warranty that comes with the appliance. Usually 1-2 years for most items, but can be longer for major appliances.

Extended Warranties

Additional coverage you purchased at time of sale. Often covers what manufacturer warranties don't.

Home Warranty Plans

Service contracts that cover repair/replacement of multiple home systems and appliances. Track the master policy and note which appliances are covered.

Credit Card Extended Warranties

Many credit cards automatically extend manufacturer warranties. Check your card benefits—this coverage is often overlooked!

Don't forget credit card benefits

Cards like Chase Sapphire, Amex, and Costco Visa often add 1-2 years of extended warranty protection automatically. Worth checking your card benefits!

Finding Warranty Information

When you need to make a claim:

  1. Go to Warranties in the sidebar
  2. Use the search bar to find by appliance name or warranty title
  3. Click to view full details and download the original document
  4. Note the claim phone number, policy number, and coverage details

Warranty Expiration Alerts

HomeLifeSpan can notify you before warranties expire, giving you time to:

  • Evaluate appliance condition before coverage ends
  • Schedule preventive maintenance under warranty
  • Decide on extended coverage if available
  • Document any existing issues while still covered
Act before expiration

If your appliance is having issues and the warranty is about to expire, file a claim now! Many people forget and miss their window.

Best Practices

Digitize Everything

Even if you keep physical copies, upload digital versions to HomeLifeSpan. Paper gets lost; digital doesn't.

Be Thorough with Details

Include:

  • Policy/warranty numbers
  • Customer service phone numbers
  • Claim procedures
  • What's covered and what's excluded

Review Annually

Set a yearly reminder to review your warranties. Remove expired ones you no longer need, and ensure new purchases are documented.
